A Munchkin Monday Monologue

So, Bubandpie was musing about her children's different language uses, in her usual eloquent and breathtakingly insightful way. Over here, it's more stream of consciousness nonsense.

My daughter is a talker. I have nooooo idea where she gets it from. Last night, in the fifteen minutes it took her to get her bedtime six ounces of whole milk from bottle to self, she treated me to a nonstop, free association monologue, with no more than three beats of the rocking chair between utterances. I reproduce highlights of it here, but you'll have to insert for yourselves random exasperated questions from me: "Munchkin? Are you done your bottle? [No!] Then please be still and drink-drink. [Ya!]" Also left to your own imagination are the associated flails and gestures that accompany the nonstop narration.

Ready?

Remember: the whole time she's got a bottle in her mouth and is intermittently drinking.

"Hi hi hi ... hi hi hi ... ... ... sing, sing. Sing! SING! ... Frosty. Frosty sing. Frosty snowman sing it. ... Mommy. Mommy-daddy. Mommy-daddy-bottle. ... Sing! ... eight eh-em ... eight eh-em ... ... ... Silent Night ... arm ... arm ... kiss-o, kiss, kiss, hug, HUG! ... back ... hand ... tatoo-Megan-Brendan-tattoo-Daddy ... tattoo ... tattoo ... Daddy? .... Mommy? ... tattoo-Rebecca-Sarah? Face! ... Feet up! ... FEET UP! ... Feet down. feetupfeetdownfeetupfeetdown ... Naked! Naked! Clothes! Jammies off! off! Socks off! ... Face ... nose ... gentle ... hair ... soft ... Naked! Running! Doudou ... holding ... Coco ... Carmel ... Pink ... bed ... bottle ... hi hi hi. Hug! Kiss! Sing Rudolph! ... Cat dog meow woof birdie ... hairdo."

Lordy. I put her in bed and she talked to herself for another 45 minutes straight!

She woke up at 5:10, and the narration commenced anew: "Read! Bottle! Chair! Hihihi."

Oh dear. Jenifer, you're soooo right about the floodgates opening. And about no one knowing how to get them shut up again, at least for bedtime.

Ooh! She sounds like my Ben!

You, friend, are in for it, LOL!

Eh, talky kids are funny. When The Boy wasn't in school yet, it was like having a full-time narrator living with me. Awesome!

I know what you mean...BUT it's too quiet when they're not there.

I think she was replaying her day for you as she had her nightcap. Did you check her for any new tatoos?

Holy free association!

You should try to record this stuff to play back to her when she's older...

That's beautiful. It made me laugh. That's quite a window into her mind.

Naked! Jammies off!

Sounds like BubTar. Is he ever a chatterbox? I've asked him, "Do you ever feel like NOT talking?" and he said, "No, I LIKE to be chatty...but not TOO chatty. Just chatty." He is running a commentary every minute of every day. Or asking questions. The only time he is quiet is when he has to take a breath. LOL.

A note on 'naked': we have this thing where every night before her bath we chase her around upstairs, down the hallway and from bedroom to bedroom, tickling her and 'stealing' her clothes ("Clothes! Off!") and then she runs around naked while the tub fills. She loves it.

We called it the language waterfall when it happened on our house. One of the things Miss M used to say was "lullaby" but she said it "lub bub pie". I would respond, "ya, I lub bub pie too."

I think we greatly anticipate each new developmental stage in our kids - and then wonder why we did! I could not wait for my boys to start talking and then when they did it was like 'Where is the turn off button?'!!

And my kids too love their 'naked runs'. It's a bathtime ritual and if we forget (it is after they get out of the tub before jammies) then we get in serious trouble.

Ah yes, I can relate. The other day I had to ask my son if he could please stop talking for 2 minutes.

It is adorable though.

Ha. And we want so badly for them to start talking... It is a fascinating thing to see a glimpse inside their wild little heads, though, no? Mine is all about singing and telling stories these days, which I love.

I love the way that parents (not specifically you, I don't really know) are delighted when their children first talk, and then afterwards sometimes wish for a bit of peace & quiet! It still sounds fairly cute though, so I suppose there's something to be thankful for.

According to my mum I used to talk about lions all the time, in jibberish, just blabbering on talking about roaring and hunting. Strange child, I think.

Bedtime, and bath time, and car rides, and all the time! I promised you this day would come. As for the naked chasing we are all about that in our house!

Sweetness. I am just amazed that you memorized it!

Bossy's daughter didn't come with a shut-off valve. Know where she can purchase one?

That is so cute. My little guy talks to himself for over an hour before he goes to sleep each night and routinely cracks himself up doing it. My husband just recorded it on the weekend actually.

That is priceless. I can't wait for it, really.

Only, I think that my girl may be, uh, CURSING at us a little.

I love the naked, naked, jammies. Nakie-babies are the BEST.

This language development phenomenon has me shaking my head all day. My twins are exactly opposite, one a chatterbox, telling me that he peed on the floor after he peeled off his diaper (and yes, he had...) and the other just soaking it all in.

How fun and get some recordings!

I love it when they just talk talk talk to themselves and sing to themselves. Processing all they've learned, thought about... I often find Ramekin talking to his bunnies or Pooh bear about various things. So cute!

I love it when the floodgates first open!

Then, of course, I wanted them to shut. Such a cute stage!

The girl is six and she is still like that and has been for as long as I can remember. The boys...more the strong silent types.
